Spoiler Alert: True Blood S04E11

I've given you my apologies and I've given you my reasons. This post is late. As a matter of fact, its over a week late. You've probably already seen the season finale of True Blood. Well, here are my thoughts of the penultimate episode of True Blood season four.

1. Possessions

At the beginning of this episode, Marne binds Antonia to her with Lafayette looking on. She casts some pretty powerful magic, including a future-seeing spell that shows Marne with a bullet through her head. It seemed pretty obvious that Marne-Antonia were going to be defeated during this episode.

In other words, the battle with Marne-Antonia was not the boss battle. For those of you out there who play video games, you're used to the boss either being replaced by a surprise other-boss or by the boss transforming into someone else. Early in this episode I began wondering: Who is going to be the final boss of the season finale if not Marne-Antonia? My first thought was that Jesus was going to cast Antonia into Lafayette and Lafayette-Antonia would be the boss. My second thought was that Jesus in his demon form would be the final boss.

My last thought was that we were going to be dealing with some kind of fairy invasion. True Blood threw a fantastic curve-ball, however, by having Lafayette get possessed by the spirit of the newly dead Marne. We have seen little things about what Marne has been able to do with the added power of Lafayette at the beginning of the season, but I'm guessing that we haven't seen anything yet.

My hope is that Lafayette is enough of a conduit for spiritual energy, a medium for souls, that he is capable of holding multiple spirits in him at once. The healing power of Tio Luca and Antonia, combined with Lafayette's strong will, may be enough to defeat Marne. Or perhaps Jesus will have to sacrifice himself so that he can possess Lafayette and join the battle. There would be some interesting repercussions to that.

2. The Reckoning

Marcus is out of control. Along with four other wolves under his command, he beat to death Sam's little brother. Furthermore, he has been providing only trouble for Luna and her daughter for years. Oh, and let's not forget that he slept with Alcide's girlfriend and attempted to run off with her and his daughter. This list of sins is enormous, and it was only a matter of time before Marcus was going to have to battle for his life.

It seemed pretty clear that Sam was going to let go of his aggression and kick the crap out of Marcus, but it should have also seemed pretty clear that he was not going to kill Marcus. First of all, Sam had to show that he was a better man. Second of all, the life and death of Marcus is a pack matter, as is the fact that he slept with Alcide's girl. Perhaps Alcide accidentally used enough force to end Marcus's life, but for the sake of pack order it appeared to be the right thing to do. The fact that Alcide is the one who ended Marcus is probably the best proof that we've seen all season to lead me to believe that Alcide is going to be the new leader of the pack, much like how Storm became the leader of the Morlocks after defeating Callisto in the X-Men comics/cartoon.

Finally, throughout this story Luna and Marcus's daughter has been a big question mark. How will she manifest when she comes of age? Will she be a wolf or will she be a shifter? Or will she be something else altogether? It seems like the time is about to come when we will find out. My hope is that she becomes a were-wolf. This could set up a kind of My Two Dads situation where Sam protects him as his own daughter and Luna as his girlfriend/wife while Alcide helps her become a responsible and good were-wolf woman within his pack.

3. Fairy Finale

I mentioned above that I thought the fairies might be the final boss in the fourth season of True Blood. Though we know that Lafayette-Marne will be the end boss, there is also the fact that every episode/season has an A Story and a B Story. My guess is that we're going to be dealing with some fairies soon, especially as witnessed by the fairy who seduces Andy Bellefleur.

There are a couple of things to think about regarding what happens with Andy and the fairy. First, we need to consider the oath that Andy takes. For some reason, and perhaps this makes sense during the season that surrounds witches and wizards, the oath that Andy swore and sealed by a finger-touch seemed a lot like the "unbreakable oath" from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Andy may be duty bound to protect this fairy while she is in this realm, and possibly duty-bound to do the bidding of all fairies.

The second thing to consider is why this happened to Andy Bellefleur. On the one hand, Andy just happened to be in the forest, the only person in the forest, when the fairies began their invasion. It may be that several fairies are entering this world, having sex with mortals, and using this fact to control them, and Andy was just our vantage point on this whole issue. On the other hand, the fairy mentioned that Andy had vampire blood in him but was not a vampire before she mounted him. I know this is a little far-fetched, but part of me thought that this is how to create a day-walker, a being with all the strengths of vampires and fairies alike but none of the weaknesses. She couldn't mate with a vampire, but perhaps the power of vampire blood can facilitate this.

It's more likely that the fairies are exercising some sort of control over the mortals, but it might be quite a terror to see a fairy-controlled vampire walking in the daylight.

See you next week!
