Spoiler Alert: True Blood S04E07

I have to apologize once again. I didn't get this edition of Spoiler Alert out before the airing of episode eight. Again, I can tell you that I have not yet watched the eighth episode, so it will have no bearing on this discussion.

Episode seven was full of action. As a result, I don't have a lot of in-depth analysis. Much of the first half of the season was all set-up, like a game of chess. Now that we've entered the second half of the season we're seeing a lot of the consequences of what has come before.

1. Medium

Jesus reveals that he has been aware for some time that Lafayette is a medium. This generally means that he is a kind of bridge between our world and the spiritual world. How long has Jesus known? Potentially since they met in the hospital, which could spell feelings of betrayal and manipulation in the future. Their relationship could potentially take a big hit very soon.

This explains how Lafayette is capable of seeing the spirit who has been possessing/protecting/threatening Arlene's baby. Lafayette hears the spirit speaking/singing in creole before making her go away by banging on a pan. Lafayette should be capable of seeing the spirit who has possessed Marne, and one might imagine that with his apparent magical strength (and coupled with the power of Tio Luca) he might be able to break these spirits of their original targets, freeing Arlene's baby and Marne both.

There was another detail that was clearly significant. Jesus explained that every time Tio Luca saved a life, it cost him some of his own life. This might explain why the great healer was incapable of outliving his own father (Jesus' grandfather). There is an immediate implication of this fact: when Lafayette saved Jesus's life, he gave up a little bit of his own. There are also bigger implications that will probably reveal themselves in time. Let's not forget that Jesus is hell-bent on fighting the vampires, which will put his life on the line, and that Tara is currently being hunted by Pam and that she has recently become the first officer of the most dangerous being in Louisiana, Marne the Possessed.

2. The Fate of Jessica

Every vampire in Bon Temps has been advised to either leave the state or to chain him/herself down with silver to prevent the final death by "Resurrection," which in this case means that Marne the witch intends to raise all the vampires into the daylight. Jessica and Bill have the luxury of being silvered to beds in a silver-barred cell surrounded by humans whose duty it is to keep them from going into the sunlight. Jessica breaks free from her chains and escapes into the sunlight.

If Jessica meets the true death, then at least things with Hoyt and Jason will be resolved. Or not. I personally believe that Jessica will survive somehow. Jason is bolting toward her. Of course, we heard a gunshot outside so he was potentially shot by secret service. At the end of Season One, Bill nearly burned in the sunlight, but he was helped back into the darkness. Perhaps this will happen in the case of Jessica. Even though Jessica will probably survive, there are some dire consequences to be faced. First of all, if Jason saves her, he'll probably have to dive onto her and land on top of her, and you know that'll lead to kissing, and you know that'll lead to a very difficult situation with Hoyt. Second of all, Jessica was only capable of breaking free because Bill skimped on the silver, which means that her death/near death will lead to a great deal of guilt on Bill's part. Finally, it appears as if Jessica may have killed a human guard while trying to break out, which is punishable by the final death. Certainly she ought to be excused because she was not acting of her own will, but will the American public and TMZ accept "a witch made me do it" as a defense? Things are about to get really difficult!

See you next week!
