Spoiler Alert: True Blood S04E03

Mind-wiped Eric is incredibly adorable. He accidentally calls Sookie by the name Snookie, which is clearly a poke at Jersey Shore. Sookie reads a Charlaine Harris novel, confirming that the author lives within the universe she created, or at least in the universe based on the universe she created. It's confusing...

That's all good and fun, but let's jump into the meat of this episode.

1. It's not exactly rocket science

All of the people in the panther tribe were born were-panthers, casting doubt as to whether they even know how to properly turn Jason into a were-panther. Jason begins to overheat, which Crystal attributes to the transformation (were-panthers and were-wolves are warmer than humans). Of course, it could just as easily be a fever, considering the fact that Jason's bite and scratch wounds might be infected by now. There is a serious question as to whether or not these were-panthers even know how to make someone a were-panther.

It is Jason's job to repopulate the were-panthers and prevent extinction, and by this they mean that he has to impregnate every single woman in the tribe. Crystal's brother/boyfriend clearly wants to kill Jason, but Crystal is making sure he is kept alive until he has done his duty. While having sex, Crystal calls Jason "Ghost Daddy," and if I'm not mistaken, the original Ghost Daddy of the myth was eaten by the ancestors of this tribe of were-panthers. When Crystal says that she and Jason are to be "together forever," I think this means that she's going to eat him and take his "magic."

2. "I Am The Authority"

There is a clear distinction being drawn between the person/vampire of Bill and the office of King that he now holds. As a person, he is responsible for his "daughter" Jessica, and he wishes to have a healthy sex life, clearly with as many women as possible. As the King, he has to enforce the law, which means that vampires caught on tape feeding on humans must experience the true death. What happens when these two things contradict? What if Jessica gets caught feeding on a human? Will Bill kill her? And what if Bill's new romantic interest, Portia Bellefleur, is using this sexual relationship to get Bill to bite her (which she offered) on tape?

3. Here, boy!

As expected, Alcide is back, and as expected, his fiance Debbie is around to complicate Sookie's relationship with everyone's favorite were-wolf. Debbie has gone through something called "the Program," which helps people with V addictions (maybe Andy Bellefleur ought to look into the Program), and she's apparently found Jesus. I wouldn't be surprised if Debbie found Jesus under the instruction of Rev. Steve Newlin, who has been missing for six months and was last seen raising a militia of anti-vampire warriors. Who better to have on that team than a few anti-vampire were-wolves?

4. Voodoo. Hoodoo? You do. Do what?

And we finally find out about that scary looking doll that was found in Hoyt and Jessica's house. It seems they've tried to throw it away several times, but it continues to come back. Jessica does what any sane vampire would do, and gives the creepy, haunted voodoo doll to a creepy, haunted voodoo child.

My theory had been that Rene Lenier had practiced voodoo and essentially created Harry Potter horcruxes. But Amy pointed out that he was much more practical, a conman and a killer, but no sorcerer. She thinks it is much more likely that some remnant of Jesus's grandfather's evil soul remains in this doll/this baby. Or it is something else completely. I think it might be interesting to know who lived in that house before Hoyt and Jessica. That might give us a good clue.

5. What possessed her to do such a thing?

Marne prays that she will be possessed by a spirit. That spirit is revealed to be a woman, and she's the same woman whose face appeared when Marne cast the spell on Eric. I bring this up only because it debunks my theory that it was, in fact, Luna's face who appeared. I think it remains important to note the connection between Luna and the Moon Goddess Emporium, and to question everyone now that there's a "Skinwalker" present, but this story is pointing elsewhere.

See you next week!
